15. advantage and disadvantage

 

 

Around the world, people are now living longer than ever before in the past. Some say an ageing population creates problems for governments. Others believe there are benefits to society having more elderly people.

To what extent do the advantages of possessing an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages?

A segment of society believes that older people create issues for the regimes whereas other oppose by saying that grey population is beneficial for the society. Although older people helps in maintainig the stability in the society, I fully agree with with former statement, because it puts extreme pressure on the government.

Those who believe the elder population to be good for society claim the most important advantage of this to be stability in the society. Since elder people do not have much life energy left in them, most of them are supposed to spend their remaining time on the earth by doing peaceful indoor activies similar to playing a board game. Which results in overall less conflicts in the society because general public, most of which will be old, will be staying home instead of being at places, say a bar, that are notorious for brawls among citizenry. A recent study conducted by a prestigious North American university shows that cities which have higher grey population are more likely to have less crime rate compared to those which have high population of youngsters.

On the other side, the main disadvantage of having more older people is the pressure that the goverment has to bear sustaining these old lives. Individuals generally leave the workforce as soon as they reach to their retirement age, which at this point is between 55 to 65 years in the world, putting the current working class under the pressure of paying off for the social benefits for them. An average retiree, for example, in North America is believed to get a fix amount of money in the form of pension. Furthermore, humans as they get old are more prone to diseases resulting into government paying more for their treatments.

In conclusion, no doubts that old population helps creating a stable society, I belive that disadvantages of this outweighs the advantages as it puts too much pressure on the regime.
