Learning essential skills, similar to cooking or crafting, is required for the holistic growth of a child. A segment of society believes that educational institutes rather concentrate on academic excellence instead of training the aforementioned activities. Even though they provide some negligible reasons to support their claim, I strongly disagree because the solution they provide causes more issues than it resolves.
Those who want schools to prioritize academic success give the reason that with the advancement of technology, the overall syllabus to be learnt by a student has increased. Covering such quantity requires more time, which can be acheived by cutting off the time from other activites. A recent study in Japan has shown that an average learner of grade 8 has 10 times more to learn in classes compared to 20 years ago. Another reason is that certain families are gifted with some skills, which they can teach better than their teacher counterpart to the youngsters. For instance, a family who runs a restaurant is more likely to have better culinary skills than an instructor.
On the other side, if schools stop teaching these skills then for certain students it would be impossible acquire the knowledge of some skills. Because there is a high possiblity that some families do not master any of the practical skills, hence, simply they cannot teach their ward. Another issue is sometimes family members are unable to give required time to train the skills due to the hectic schedule. It is normal for both parents of a nuclear family to work nowadays, which leaves them no spare time to indulge in learning activites with their children.
In conclusion, focusing only on academics has a few upsides, however, other skills cannot be learnt at home by everyone hence schools should continue teaching them.
